Kids Helping Kids Program
To enhance teaching children kindness, generosity and empathy, we introduced a “Kids Helping Kids” unit about fifteen years ago. The children have supported different children’s needs over the years including hunger, disease, lack of clothing and literacy.
This year, as we have done in the past two years, our children have been doing “chores” at home to raise money, with their parents' help, to purchase pajamas and a book for a child-in-need. The New Jersey Chapter of the Pajama Program is based at the Poricy Park Conservancy and their volunteers have distributed 60,000 pairs of pajamas and books in the past five years.
To participate in the program, please help your child to find age-appropriate tasks around your home, or for family and neighbors, to raise money to purchase a book and pajamas. Do not overpay them for their efforts - children know value! It is unlikely that your child will be able to raise the amount of money needed to pay for the entire purchase, but we are looking for effort from each child. You are welcome to make a donation to your child’s cause, but please make sure your child knows that you or a family member is donating so he or she can raise the needed money. Allow your child to help pick out the pajamas and the book to give away. There are suggested tasks that the children could accomplish on the hallway chalk board, but do not be limited by our suggestions.
The purchases can be placed in a box outside of Mrs. Savage’s office on or before February 29th, 2012. Please use string or ribbon to tie the pajamas and book together. Remove all hangers.
Also, I will collect gently-used children’s clothing and coats during the month of February which I will deliver to Lunch Break in Red Bank.
